Threads: Instagram's Microblogging Platform Challenges Twitter's Dominance

Threads is Instagram's microblogging platform, inspired by Twitter, and has gained the nickname "Twitter Killer" due to its similarities. Meta, the parent company of Instagram, aims to capitalize on Twitter's controversies by providing a more "sanely moderated" alternative

.

Described as a conversations app, Threads allows users to create text-based posts with up to 500 characters, as well as share photos and videos up to five minutes long. The interface resembles Twitter, featuring a minimal design with options to like, comment, repost, and share threads.

Since Threads is closely integrated with Instagram, users can log in with their Instagram username and easily follow the same people they do on the other platform.

To download and install Threads, users can find it on both Google Play Store and Apple's App Store. The platform is accessible from desktop browsers as well as mobile devices. Instagram also employed a clever marketing tactic by creating a customizable ticket with a QR code leading to Threads' official website or app store, enabling users to download and sign up seamlessly. To obtain this ticket, users can simply search for "threads" in the Instagram search bar.

Threads had a highly successful launch day, attracting over 10 million users within the first seven hours. In comparison, Clubhouse, a social audio application often considered Twitter's biggest rival, took almost three years to reach the same user milestone. Mastodon, a decentralized social networking company gaining popularity, also currently boasts 10 million users. However, Threads' success is not surprising, given its direct access to Instagram's extensive user base of over 2.35 billion active users. It allows Instagram users to easily transition their usernames and profiles to the Threads platform. Nonetheless, similar to other Meta applications, there are certain restrictions. Once users create a Threads profile, deleting it will also result in the deletion of their Instagram profile. However, users can deactivate their Threads profile without completely erasing their data from the Threads server.

In terms of functionality, Threads closely resembles Twitter, but without the public relations issues that Twitter has faced, particularly since Elon Musk's involvement. This similarity, combined with Meta's privacy practices, is unlikely to deter users from adopting Threads.

Threads offers a cleaner and smoother user experience compared to Twitter. Meta has effectively created a platform that closely emulates Twitter's features, such as likes, retweets, and following. As Twitter becomes more cumbersome under Musk's leadership, Threads is seen as a refreshing alternative. However, it lacks some popular features that contributed to Twitter's distinctive community experience, including hashtags, trending lists, and Twitter Spaces (similar to Clubhouse).

Threads has not launched in the European Union yet due to ongoing discussions about data sharing regulations between Threads and the Instagram app. Meta is awaiting further guidance regarding the Digital Markets Act, new EU competition rules that regulate how major online platforms utilize their market power. Stricter data sharing regulations under the DMA could prevent tech companies from monopolizing the market and favoring their own products. Meta's use of data sharing to rapidly expand Threads' user base is likely to boost advertising revenue as well.

Data privacy concerns surround Threads, as mandatory disclosures on iOS reveal that the app may collect highly sensitive user information to create profiles of their digital activity. This includes health and financial data, precise location, browsing history, contacts, search history, and other sensitive information. However, Twitter is not far behind in data collection, as it also gathers browsing history, purchase data, and contact information. The primary difference between Threads and Twitter in terms of data collection lies in financial information, with Twitter lacking payment features on its platform. Nevertheless, Meta should prioritize addressing any privacy concerns to maintain user trust.
